Adding two complex numbers can be done by separately adding the real parts of the numbers and the imaginary parts:  

$$x + y = (a + bi) + (c + di) = \underset{real}{\underbrace{(a + c)}} + \underset{imaginary}{\underbrace{(b + d)}}i $$
